Scholarship established in name of late journalist

The University of Minnesota Duluth is hosting a reception at 6 p.m. Feb. 7 to celebrate the Larry Oakes Journalism Scholarship.

The $1,200 award goes to a student to pursue an internship with a Minnesota newspaper. Donations to the scholarship can be made by calling (218) 726-6322.

The scholarship was established by friends and family of the late journalist, who covered northern Minnesota for the News Tribune and later the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Oakes studied journalism at UMD — and eventually taught there — before transferring to the University of Minnesota. He died in early 2013.

As for interested UMD journalism students: This year’s deadline has passed, but keep your eyes on UMD’s Writing Studies webpage for information on applying next year.
