Fire truck or bus?

Four Duluth elementary students earned rides to their schools in a fire truck after winning the Duluth Fire Department’s fire-prevention safety contest.

Today a Laura MacArthur first-grader and a Piedmont kindergartener will get rides to their schools. A Raleigh Edison fourth-grader and a Congdon third-grader got rides Wednesday.

And on Saturday there will be an open house at Fire Station 7, 1419 W. Maple Grove Road, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There’ll be free BBQ, tours of the station, a chance for kids to spray a fire hose and demonstrations with the new fire-safety trailer.

The events are part of fire-prevention week. The week’s theme this year is preventing cooking fires. According to fire researchers, cooking is the leading cause of home fires — with 40 percent of all home fires starting in the kitchen.
