Follmer, 48, started about 6:30 a.m. and made the swim in about 3 hours, 45 minutes, without assistance (though friends in a boat shadowed him, for safety) and without wearing a wetsuit. Why? It was just “something to do,” he said.
He had tried the feat before, he said, without success as waves kicked up. But on Saturday morning, the wind was calm and the water smooth as glass and relatively mild, allowing Follmer to complete the swim and enjoy a well-deserved, lake-cooled beer at the finish.
When asked what the next big swim would be, Follmer and his friends replied, “Cornucopia to Two Harbors.” We’re not sure if that was a joke or not — but anyone who swims 6 miles in Lake Superior already has earned the respect of the Eh? desk.
