The Duluth Entertainment Convention Center chalked up some impressive garbage stats in 2012, saving more than 81,000 tons of material from the landfill, or more than 64 percent of all of the waste it generated.
The facility turned 74,520 pounds of waste into compost and recycled 41,400 pounds of cardboard, 35,330 pounds of glass, plastic and aluminum, 6,830 pounds of mixed paper and 4,040 pounds of vinyl.
That’s a lot of stuff.
Each year, staff members at the DECC redouble efforts to reduce garbage output, according to Assistant Executive Director Chelly Townsend.
“Everything we throw away just kind of hurts,” she said.
