Toys and peace

Starting Friday, the Northland Chapter of Grandmothers for Peace will be collecting toys for its toy drive. Cool, right? Well, not so fast. Read the rules, buddy.

The group isn’t collecting just any toys — it’s looking for peaceful toys. They need to promote nonviolent play, so don’t even try to slip in a plastic machine gun (or a real one) or a ninja sword.

Participating businesses and organizations will have decorated boxes for the unwrapped toy donations. Those participating are:

In Duluth: University of Minnesota Duluth Women’s Resource and Action Center; Peace Church, 1111 N. 11th Ave. E.; Explorations, 201 W. Superior St.; Chester Creek Café/At Sara’s Table, 1902 E. Eighth St.; Taste of Saigon, 394 S. Lake Ave.

In Superior: Cathedral of Christ the King Church, 1111 Belknap St.; Superior Public Library Children’s Room, 1530 Tower Ave.; Take 2 Consignments, 1202 Belknap St.; Superior-Douglas County YMCA, 9 N. 21st St.; WITC Early Childhood Education Program, 600 N. 21st St.; Superior High School FBLA, 2600 Catlin Ave.

The toy drive runs through Dec. 20. Toys will be donated to Loaves and Fishes, Safe Haven and Daboo’igan, CASDA, Toys For Tots, Harbor House and St. Vincent DePaul. For more information, call (715) 392-2147 or (715) 718-0710.

All we are saying is give peaceful toys a chance.
