How do you choose a charity?

A reader dropped in the other day to share his concerns about all the solicitations he gets for charitable donations.

He said he used to donate to some veterans organizations but then he saw a TV expose about how some of those organizations spend most of their money on administration and don’t do much good with your money. So now he’s afraid to give to any of them.

Who can he trust? Several organizations study the financial filings of charities and rank them on their effectiveness.

Our reader was wondering about the Wounded Warrior Project and Disabled American Veterans. Both of those organizations are ranked well enough. There are lesser-known charities that are ranked a bit higher.
