Calling all green thumbs!
St. Louis County gardening gurus Bob Olen and Kendall Dykhuis will host two workshops next week on how to plan now for a better garden in 2013.
The St. Louis County Extension Office is offering Soils and Success: Looking Ahead to Gardening in 2013. The workshop will emphasize soil testing and provide a recap of the 2012 growing season and results from vegetable research conducted this year. There also will be discussion on newer plant materials and preparation for growing asparagus.
The workshop will be offered Thursday at the Mountain Iron Community Center, 8586 Enterprise Drive S. in — you guessed it — Mountain Iron, and Oct. 25 at the Evergreen Community Center, 5830 W. Grand Ave. in Duluth. Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m. and the program begins at 6 p.m. each day. Admission for each is $15. The program is part of the St. Louis County Healthy Foods Initiative.
“With food prices rising, we’re seeing an increase in the number of people who want to grow their own food,” said Olen, who will be speaking with Dykhuis at the events. “These workshops are a great way to get a head start and increase their odds for success next year.”
