Lighten that backpack load

Sixty-seven million children carry more weight than they should in the backpacks, according to the American Occupational Therapy Association. (2005 file / News Tribune)

When it comes to schoolwork, sometimes it can feel as if you have the weight of the world on your shoulders. That might be because you’re carrying way too much stuff in your backpack.

That problem will be addressed 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Douglas County Youth Fair at Superior Middle School, where the College of St. Scholastica occupational therapy department will be on hand to weigh students and their backpacks so kids know how to pack those bags and how much is too much to carry.

While it’s too late to get your loved ones gifts in time to celebrate the American Occupation Therapy Association’s National Backpack Awareness Day — it was Wednesday — it’s not too late to save your kid from a potential lifetime of back pain.

Superior Middle School is located at 3626 Hammond Ave.
