Veterans Memorial in Chisholm gets big addition

You know how it’s big news in the shopping world when a mall gets a new anchor tenant, right?

Well, here’s bigger news: The Veterans Memorial at the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm just got a new anchor. As in an actual anchor, and a big one. It’s from the USS Morgan Baker, according to Glenn Jackola, commander of American Legion Post 247 in Chisholm.

The anchor weighs 11 tons and stands 14 feet high, Jackola tells us, and was secured from the U.S. Navy.

The anchor was placed Tuesday with the help of some local companies. It was transported from Texas by a truck donated by L&M Radiator of Hibbing and will be placed by a crane belonging to Domex of Hibbing and paid for by Hibbing Taconite, according to Jackola.

“We had about 25 Navy veterans in attendance,” he tells us. “It was a fun morning and Navy vets from WWII on felt gratified.”

The memorial now has military hardware from all branches of service, Jackola said.
