Ely, Iron River host blueberry festivals this weekend

This is one weekend you can attend Northland festivals until you’re blue in the face — literally — as two communities celebrate that summer staple of the north woods, the blueberry.

Up in Ely, the 32nd annual Blueberry Art Festival kicked off Friday and continues through Sunday in Whiteside Park, with several hundred artists and vendors showing off their work and wares. There’s also food — we suspect at least a few items will contain blueberries — and music each day.

The festival continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Go to ely.org for more information.

Over in Wisconsin, Iron River’s annual Blueberry Festival runs today and Sunday at Moon Lake Park, with events including a pedal tractor pull contest (10 a.m. today), blueberry pie-eating contest (3 p.m. today and 2:30 p.m. Sunday), a parade through town (12:15 p.m. Sunday) and a cardboard boat race (3:30 p.m. Sunday). And, of course, rides, music and plenty of blueberry cuisine. For more details, go to irlions.com.

Savor the fresh berries while you can — that taste of summer sun, and the summer sun itself, will be gone before you know it.
