New roof + old lab = big energy savings

The Minnesota Energy Resources gas company Friday awarded a $16,000 rebate check to the Coleraine Minerals Lab office of UMD’s Natural Resources Research Institute.

The rebate equals the savings the lab incurred when it put new, energy-efficient roofing on the 1950s-era buildings. The new roofs saved 32,400 therms and paid for itself in 18 months.

The rebate is part of Minnesota Energy Resources’ Commercial & Industrial Turn-Key Efficiency Program, a program designed to help customers who use more than 100,000 therms per year (one therm equals 10,000 BTUs).
