Drop off mercury, electronics in Silver Bay area

NorthShore Mining Co. is sponsoring a free mercury product disposal event today for people in the Silver Bay area.

Items can be dropped off at John’s Sanitary, 15 Golf Course Drive, Silver Bay, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

People can get rid of their used fluorescent bulbs, old thermostats, switches and gas range pilot shut-offs that contain mercury, along with computers and monitors, stereos, cell phones, microwaves, circuit boards and TVs.

Last year, 26,863 pounds of electronics and 2,910 mercury-containing light bulbs were collected through the one-day event.
