Fundraising efforts for the Mike Colalillo Scholarship will reach its $25,000 goal this weekend with a sold-out fundraiser.

“I think it is significant,” John Marshall, Duluth Combined Honor Guard spokesman, said. “A scholarship is available in Mike’s name. It’s a great thing to honor our native son and all he did in service to country and community.”

Colalillo was awarded the Medal of Honor, America’s highest military honor, for his actions during World War II. He died Dec. 30 at age 86.

The Duluth Combined Honor Guard, Northland Veterans Services, and the St. Louis County Historical Society’s Veterans’ Memorial Hall program cooperated to create the scholarship in honor of Colalillo. It is available to history majors and minors living in St. Louis County.

“We wanted to do that before we lost Mike,” Marshall said.
